What is the brand name of Carbamazepine?

Carbamazepine is a generic prescription drug manufactured by various companies, such as Apotex, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, and Umedica laboratories. Brand-name versions of this drug include Tegretol, Epitol, and Teril.

What is Carbamazepine?

Carbamazepine is a generic prescription drug used to prevent and control seizures. This medication is classified as an anticonvulsant or anti-epileptic drug. It may also be used to relieve nerve pain from trigeminal neuralgia. Carbamazepine is sometimes prescribed as a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder.

Carbamazepine works by reducing abnormal or excess nerve signals that can contribute to seizure activity. Carbamazepine comes in the form of an oral tablet that is usually taken with food. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Carbamazepine can be used in children, although body weight will be used to determine an appropriate dose. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of this medication and gradually increase it to reduce the risk of side effects.

Avoid consuming grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking this drug. Grapefruit can increase your risk of side effects. Tell your doctor about other medical conditions you may have or medications you may be taking, such as prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements. Other medications may interact with Carbamazepine and increase the risk of side effects.

Do not stop using this medication without first consulting your doctor. Your condition may become worse if treatment is suddenly stopped. Your doctor may need to reduce your dose slowly over a period of time.

What are the side effects of Carbamazepine?

Common side effects resulting from the use of Carbamazepine may include vomiting, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and unsteadiness. Other side effects may include dry mouth, constipation, diarrhea, joint pain, and fatigue. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any effects.

Serious side effects of Carbamazepine include skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience hives, severe rash, mouth sores, or blistering skin. Carbamazepine may also cause blood disorders with symptoms such as severe fatigue, fever, bruising, and nose bleeds.

In some rare cases, a small number of patients who use anticonvulsants may experience depression, suicidal thoughts, or mental problems. Talk to your doctor or caregiver if you notice any sudden mood changes, feelings of depression, or suicidal thoughts.

Contact your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Carbamazepine as this is not a complete list of side effects.
