What is Tegretol-Xr?
Tegretol-Xr is an extended-release prescription drug that controls particular types of seizures in patients with epilepsy, a nervous system disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Tegretol-Xr is also prescribed to prevent nerve pain (neuralgia) in patients with facial or throat nerve disorders (trigeminal neuralgia or glossopharyngeal neuralgia).
The active ingredient in Tegretol-Xr, carbamazepine, is an anticonvulsant drug that works by reducing the brain's excitability. Seizures are the repetitive and disorganized firing of nerves in the brain. By reducing excitability, Tegretol-Xr prevents seizures when they start.
Trigeminal neuralgia is a painful condition caused by the central nerve in the face, the trigeminal nerve. Sudden, intense pain can be caused by simple activities, such as eating. The glossopharyngeal nerve is the central nerve to the throat, tongue, and ears. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is characterized by sudden, intense pain due to simple activities such as swallowing. Carbamazepine prevents this jolt of pain in much the same way it prevents seizures.
Tegretol-Xr is taken as a tablet twice daily. Its effects last for 12 hours.
