Topiramate is a generic prescription medication. It is categorized as an anticonvulsant and antiepileptic used to treat seizures and prevent migraine headaches in adults and children. This medication reduces the duration and frequency of seizures and halts the development of migraines. It works by dampening excessive nerve firings, enhances neurotransmitters, and blocks the effects of other chemical messengers.

Topiramate is available as tablets or in capsule form. Healthcare professionals advise that you take this prescription drug on an empty stomach so that it can be better absorbed into the body. Topiramate is only available with a doctor's prescription and should therefore only be used as prescribed.
