Lokelma is a prescription medication used to treat hyperkalemia which is a condition where there is a high level of potassium in the blood. High potassium levels can cause symptoms such as nausea, muscle weakness, tiredness, and irregular heartbeats. This medication works directly in the intestines to remove excess potassium from the body. Lokelma does not work right away and should not be used to treat life-threatening high levels of potassium.
This medication comes in the form of an oral powder for reconstitution. If you are taking other medication, use this medication two hours after or two hours before. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.
This medication must be mixed before use. Open a packet and mix the powdered contents with water. Stir then drink the mixture right away. If there is any powder left in the glass, add more water, stir and drink again. Repeat until no powder is left in the glass. Use this medication on a regular basis to get the most benefit from it.
