Budesonide is a generic medicine, which is a substitute for brand-name drugs including Entocort EC and Uceris.
Budesonide is an FDA-approved anti-inflammatory prescription drug manufactured by several companies, including Perrigo Co., Mylan, and Amneal Pharmaceuticals. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as mild to moderate Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. While it does not cure these conditions, it helps to treat symptoms such as pain and diarrhea or maintain remission. It is a corticosteroid that works by decreasing the body's immune response. Budesonide can interact with other medications, so tell your doctor about all of the other medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or supplements.
Before taking Budesonide, talk to your doctor if you ever had: a serious bacterial infection, cirrhosis or another liver disease, tuberculosis, stomach ulcer, osteoporosis, eczema, diabetes, or glaucoma.
Budesonide should be taken by mouth as directed by your doctor, generally once daily in the morning.
The usual adult dose for Budesonide is 9 mg orally once a day in the morning for up to eight weeks. After eight weeks and as patient symptoms become controlled, the maintenance dosage (6 mg daily for up to 3 months) should begin.
Swallow Budesonide whole. Avoid chewing or crushing the medication as it can release all of the drug at once and increase the risk of side effects. When taking Budesonide, avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice as it can increase the chance of side effects with the medication. This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed in order to get the most benefit from it.
Common side effects of Budesonide may include the following symptoms: headache, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea or constipation, tiredness, acne, back/joint pain, rounding of the face (“moon face”) or cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat.
Get emergency medical help right away if you begin to experience the following signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Talk with a healthcare professional for more information before using Budesonide as this is not a list of all side effects that can occur when using this prescription drug.
