Is there a generic of Veltassa?

Veltassa is manufactured by Vifor Pharma and is available only as a brand-name drug for now. A generic version is not available.

What is Veltassa?

Veltassa is a prescription drug used to treat high levels of potassium in your blood (hyperkalemia). This drug works by binding to the potassium in your digestive tract and prevents the body from absorbing too much. Veltassa can also assist your body in getting rid of excess potassium through your bowel movements. This medication differs from others in that it goes through the stomach and into the intestines without being absorbed into your bloodstream.

This medicine is not approved for anyone under 18 years old. Do not take this drug if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Tell your healthcare provider if you have bowel or bowel movement problems or have had bowel surgery. Also, tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you're taking, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

What are the side effects of Veltassa?

The most common side effects of Veltassa include but are not limited to, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach discomfort, and gas.

If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help. Other serious side effects, such as low potassium or magnesium levels, could occur.

Seek medical advice from your healthcare provider if you experience adverse effects that are bothersome or do not go away. These are not all of the possible side effects of Veltassa. You can also report side effects to the FDA.

Consult your healthcare professional for additional information.

What time of day should I take Veltassa?

Take Veltassa once daily with food, as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not take any other medications by mouth within 3 hours (before or after) of taking Veltassa. Mix the powder with water before taking it. Stir well and drink right away. Then, add some more water to the glass, swirl gently, and drink immediately. Do not consume the dry powder alone—it must be mixed with water. You can mix Veltassa with other drinks or soft food like applesauce but do not mix hot liquids with the powder.

What can I take instead of Veltassa?

If you are interested in an alternative for Veltassa, consult your healthcare provider for professional medical advice to determine which drug is appropriate for you. Some examples of Veltassa alternatives include Lokelma (sodium zirconium cyclosilicate) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate.
