What is Levetiracetam?

Levetiracetam is a generic prescription drug that controls partial seizures in patients with epilepsy, a nervous system disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. It can also be used, along with other medicine(s), for myoclonic seizures or primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

Levetiracetam belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. Levetiracetam is available as a tablet that is taken by mouth.

What drugs interact with Levetiracetam? 

Before taking Levetiracetam, tell your healthcare provider about any allergies to medications, and all of the medications you take, including prescription medications, OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Levetiracetam should not be combined with alcohol. 

Examples of drug interactions include, but are not limited to:

  • Promethazine

  • Reglan (metoclopramide)

  • Tranylcypromine

  • Wellbutrin (bupropion)

What are the side effects of Levetiracetam?

Common side effects of Levetiracetam in adults may include, but are not limited to, drowsiness, weakness, infection, and dizziness. Children who take Levetiracetam may experience fatigue, aggression, appetite loss, irritability, and a stuffy nose. 

Allergic reactions and serious skin reactions are rare but require emergency medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Symptoms of a serious skin reaction include fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple rash, or blistering and peeling skin. 

Tell your physician right away if you have trouble sleeping, or if you notice any changes in mood and behavior, including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, agitation, irritability, or thoughts of suicide.

Notify your healthcare provider right away if you have:

  • Confusion

  • Hallucinations

  • Extreme drowsiness 

  • Loss of balance or coordination

  • Problems with walking or movement

  • A skin rash

  • Easy bruising/bleeding

  • Fever, chills, or weakness
