What is Tegretol?

Tegretol is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to prevent and control seizures. It is known as an anti-epileptic or anticonvulsant drug. Tegretol works by reducing the excessive nerve activity in the brain and restoring the normal balance of nerve activity. In some cases, this medication may also be used to treat bipolar disorder.

This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet and is usually taken with food twice a day. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your physician may instruct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully when using this drug.

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Tegretol unless your doctor or pharmacist says you may do so safely. Grapefruit may increase the chance of side effects with this drug. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Do not stop taking Tegretol without talking to your doctor. Some conditions may worsen when this drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.

What are the side effects of Tegretol?

The most common side effects of Tegretol are drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and problems with coordination (unsteadiness). Other unwanted side effects are possible, such as dry mouth, constipation, loss of appetite, and muscle aches. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects, or if side effects persist or worsen. Empty tablet shells may appear in your stool after you have taken this medication. This effect is harmless as your body has already absorbed the medication.

Seek medical attention if you experience any serious side effects, such as a skin rash, confusion, weakness, fever, mouth sores, unusual tiredness, or increased seizures. There is an increased risk of blood cell disorders and low levels of sodium (hyponatremia) while using Tegretol.

Ask your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Tegretol as this is not a complete list of side effects or drug interactions.
