What is the brand name of Nystatin?

Nystatin is a generic prescription medication. Most forms of nystatin are only available as generic. The topical powder is also available in a brand-name formulation called Nystop.

What is Nystatin?

Nystatin is an antifungal prescription medication used to treat certain types of fungal infections. Specific formulations of Nystatin can treat fungal infections in the intestines, tongue, mouth, and throat. Nystatin works by disrupting fungal cell membranes, which helps stop fungal growth. This medication should not be used to treat fungal infections of the blood.

Nystatin is prescribed as an ointment, powder, or cream for fungal skin infections. The topical product is applied two or three times daily until the area is healed.  Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider and for the full length of treatment prescribed.

What are the side effects of Nystatin?

Side effects of Nystatin vary based on which formulation you are using. Common side effects of the oral medication include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Common side effects of the topical formulations include local irritation, burning, itching, and discomfort.

Serious allergic reactions to Nystatin are rare, but if you experience signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction, you should seek immediate medical attention. Common signs of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness.

Consult your healthcare provider or healthcare provider for more information on the benefits and risks involved with using this medication. Discuss medical advice, warnings, precautions, drug interactions, and other side effects associated with using Nystatin before starting treatment.

Who should not use Nystatin?

Nystatin is not safe for everyone. You should not take this medication if you are allergic to nystatin or any ingredient in the medication.

Do you rinse or swallow Nystatin?

If you are using the oral liquid form of Nystatin (nystatin oral suspension), take it exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Infants will be given lower doses, with half of each dose placed inside each cheek.

For children and adults, Nystatin is usually given as 4 to 6 mL per dose, four times daily. When taking the medicine, half the dose is placed in each side of the mouth. Then, keep it in your mouth as long as possible before swallowing. Follow any other special instructions given by your healthcare provider.
