What is Exoderm?
Exoderm was a brand-name prescription lotion prescribed to patients with fungal infections of the skin, particularly ringworm and tinea versicolor, a yeast infection that changes skin pigmentation. The active ingredients in Exoderm were sodium thiosulfate and salicylic acid which work together to remove the yeast infection from the skin. Sodium thiosulfate is normally used as an antidote for cyanide poisoning but is also sometimes used with boric acid in solution to treat fungal infections. Both sodium thiosulfate and salicylic acid are keratolytics. These drugs soften outer skin tissues so that they can easily fall or rub off, taking the yeast infection in those tissues with them. Sodium thiosulfate is also an antifungal drug that kills the fungus.
