Ovide is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Taro Pharmaceuticals. The generic version of this drug is malathion.
Ovide is a topical prescription drug used to treat head lice that may infest and irritate your scalp. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as organophosphates. It works by paralyzing and killing lice and their eggs.
Ovide comes in the form of a 0.5% topical lotion for use on the hair and scalp only. Apply this medication on dry hair, using enough to make the scalp and hair wet. Allow your hair to dry, uncovered. After applying this medication, run a fine-tooth comb through your wet hair to remove dead lice and lice eggs. This medication should be left in your hair for eight to twelve hours, after which it should be washed out. Repeat this treatment as many times as necessary.
Avoid getting this medication in your nose, ears, mouth, and eyes. If this medication accidentally comes into contact with your eyes, flush with water to reduce irritation. If irritation continues or you experience vision changes, talk to your doctor.
Common side effects of Ovide include irritation, burning, or stinging after applying the medication. In rare cases, Ovide can cause chemical burns. If Ovide gets in the eyes, Ovide may also cause inflammation of the eye. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects, or if they persist or worsen.
Serious allergic reactions to Ovide are possible. You should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
