Anoro Ellipta is a combination bronchodilator medication that contains umeclidinium and vilanterol in an inhalation powder. It is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Anoro Ellipta helps prevent and control symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath.
Umeclidinium is a long-acting muscarinic antagonist, or anticholinergic medication, while vilanterol is a long-acting beta-adrenergic agonist (LABA). Together, these active ingredients work to relax the smooth muscles around the lungs and airways. This mode of action allows the airways to open up and makes breathing easier.
For Anoro Ellipta to be effective, it must be used regularly, as prescribed by a healthcare provider. The recommended dosage of Anoro Ellipta is one inhalation per day. Use the medicine at the same time each day and not more than once in a 24-hour period.
Note: Anoro Ellipta is not approved to treat asthma and should not be used as a rescue inhaler to treat sudden breathing problems or bronchospasms.
Common side effects of Anoro Ellipta include sore throat (pharyngitis), sinus infection (sinusitis), lower respiratory tract infections, common cold symptoms, constipation, and diarrhea. Other common side effects of Anoro Ellipta include pain in the arms or legs, muscle spasms, neck pain, and chest pain. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience these or other serious side effects.
Serious side effects of Anoro Ellipta may include sudden breathing problems after administration of the drug, heart problems, new or worsened eye problems, urinary retention, and allergic reactions. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction to Anoro Ellipta may include rash, hives, swelling of the face, mouth, or tongue, and breathing problems. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious side effects, such as an allergic reaction.
Consult a healthcare professional for medical advice and more information about other possible side effects. This is not a complete list of side effects.
Vilanterol is processed by the CYP3A4 enzyme in the liver. Drugs that block this enzyme, called CYP3A4 inhibitors, can cause increased blood levels of vilanterol and increase the risk of side effects. Caution should be taken when combining Anoro Ellipta with a CYP3A4 inhibitor, such as ketoconazole, ritonavir, and clarithromycin.
Anoro Ellipta should be used with caution in people taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants. Caution should also be taken when using Anoro Ellipta within two weeks of stopping an MAOI or tricyclic antidepressant. Combining these drugs with Anoro Ellipta may increase the risk of heart problems.
Beta-blockers may counteract the effects of beta-agonists like vilanterol. Cardioselective beta-blockers may be preferred in people with COPD taking Anoro Ellipta.
Anoro Ellipta may also interact with non-potassium-sparing diuretics and anticholinergic drugs.
Consult a healthcare provider about other possible drug interactions. Tell your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, such as prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements, before using Anoro Ellipta.
Anoro Ellipta is administered through one inhalation by mouth once daily. It should be used at the same time every day and not more than once every 24 hours.
You can use the following steps as a guide for administering Anoro Ellipta.
Open the inhaler cover
Breathe out while holding the inhaler away from your mouth
Place your lips over the mouthpiece and take one long, steady breath through your mouth
Remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for three to four seconds
