Is there a generic of Symbicort?

Symbicort is a brand-name medication. A generic version called Breyna has been recently approved by the FDA and may be available at a pharmacy near you. Generic medications are usually cheaper than their brand-name counterparts, but they contain identical ingredients and work in the same way.

What is Symbicort?

Symbicort is an inhalation aerosol containing budesonide and formoterol. It is used to control and prevent symptoms of asthma and COPD. Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation in the airways, and formoterol is a long-acting beta-agonist that helps relax the smooth muscles of the airways. The combination of these ingredients helps improve breathing for people with asthma or COPD.

Symbicort is available as an inhaler that is typically used twice daily. Symbicort is not used for the treatment of an acute COPD or asthma attack. A rescue inhaler may be prescribed in addition to Symbicort for such events.

What does Symbicort do to the lungs?

Symbicort is a combination of two medicines: budesonide and formoterol. Symbicort works to help open the lungs and airways, which can make it easier to breathe. Symbicort must be used consistently in order to provide maximum benefits.

What doses of Symbicort are available?

Symbicort is administered through an inhaler. It's available in the following strengths/dosages of budesonide/formoterol: 80 mcg-4.5 mcg/inh and 160 mcg-4.5 mcg/inh.

To use Symbicort, shake the inhaler for five seconds before each use. The inhaler may need to be primed if seven days have passed between uses. Priming the inhaler involves shaking the inhaler and spraying the inhaler two times into the air away from the face.

Symbicort is often used two times per day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Symbicort must be used regularly to be effective. Always follow your healthcare professional's instructions when taking Symbicort, especially if you're currently using another inhaler or taking another steroid. Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after every use.

Symbicort doesn't immediately work and is not a rescue inhaler, so you should not rely on it in the event of a sudden asthma attack. If you are experiencing an asthma attack, you should use a quick-relief rescue inhaler instead.

How long does it take for Symbicort to start working?

Symbicort takes at least 15 minutes to start working. Because it doesn't work immediately, you should not take Symbicort if your symptoms suddenly worsen, especially during a COPD or asthma attack. Symbicort must be taken regularly—typically twice per day or evenly spaced apart by 12 hours—to be an effective treatment.

What are the side effects of Symbicort?

Some side effects of Symbicort include:

  • Headache

  • Throat irritation

  • Upset stomach

  • Throat pain

  • Nasal congestion

  • Vomiting

  • Oral thrush

  • Sinus inflammation

Let your healthcare provider know if any of these side effects continually get worse.

Symbicort may also cause other side effects, including increased blood pressure, fast heartbeat, nervousness, and tremors. Serious side effects of Symbicort include pneumonia, lower respiratory tract infections, adrenal gland problems, changes in blood sugar levels, low blood potassium levels, stunted growth in children, and severe allergic reactions.

After using Symbicort, it is important to rinse the mouth with water in order to prevent a fungal infection of the mouth (oral thrush).

Do not suddenly stop taking Symbicort. Abruptly discontinuing this medication may result in symptoms of withdrawal. These symptoms could include dizziness, nausea, weakness or fatigue, and aches or pains.

To avoid drug interactions, talk to your healthcare provider about other inhalers that you're currently taking. Your healthcare provider may prescribe another inhaler to further manage your symptoms.

Which inhaler is comparable to Symbicort?

A generic version of Symbicort called Breyna has been approved and authorized for use as a cheaper alternative to Symbicort. This generic version contains the same ingredients and works in the same way as Symbicort.

If Symbicort does not seem to be working for you, ask your doctor about Symbicort alternatives, such as Advair, Breo, and Dulera. These brand-name combination inhalers may be used to treat asthma or COPD. Your healthcare provider can provide professional medical advice and help you find the best inhaler for you. These Symbicort inhaler alternatives typically contain a combination of an inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting beta-agonist. They are usually prescribed to be taken daily.

Many Symbicort alternatives are brand-only drugs, which means they can be relatively expensive. The price of Symbicort without insurance is currently $511.72 per 1, 10.2GM of 160-4.5MCG/ACT Inhaler. Search singlecare.com to compare prices and discounts between Symbicort, Advair, Dulera, and other inhalers.

Who should not take Symbicort?

You should not use Symbicort if you are experiencing an acute COPD or asthma attack. You should also avoid Symbicort if you are allergic to any ingredients in Symbicort. You should tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have or other medications you may be taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements, before starting treatment with Symbicort.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Heart problems

  • High blood pressure

  • Thyroid problems

  • Diabetes

  • Liver problems

  • Osteoporosis

  • Immune system problems

  • Allergies to any drugs

  • Seizures

  • An active infection

  • Exposure to chickenpox or measles

Symbicort may need to be avoided in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Symbicort may cause harm to an unborn baby. Budesonide, one of the active ingredients in Symbicort, can pass into breast milk. Consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best treatment for you while pregnant or breastfeeding. Other treatment options are available.
