What is Breo Ellipta?

What doses of Breo Ellipta are available?

Breo Ellipta is available as an inhalation powder in strengths of 100 mcg-25 mcg and 200 mcg-25 mcg fluticasone-vilanterol per inhalation. Breo Ellipta should be taken once a day to maintain open airways and reduce symptoms in adults with COPD or asthma. This prescription medicine is not approved for use in children. What if a miss a dose of Breo Ellipta? 

If you miss a dose of Breo Ellipta, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to try to make up for a missed dose.  

How should I store my Breo Ellipta?

Store Breo Ellipta at room temperature, in a dry place. Keep away from direct heat, light, and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Keep Breo Ellipta in the sealed foil tray until you are ready to start using it. Discard Breo Ellipta 6 weeks after opening the foil tray, or when the counter reads “0,” whichever comes first. Do not reuse or take apart the inhaler. 

What are the side effects of Breo Ellipta?

Breo Ellipta can cause headache, joint or back pain, cough, upper respiratory tract infection, runny nose, and sore throat. It can also cause other adverse reactions, including fungal infection in your mouth or throat (thrush), sinus infection, and pneumonia.

Breo Ellipta may cause severe hypersensitivity reactions, such as hives, skin rashes, and swelling, in those who are allergic to fluticasone furoate, vilanterol, or other ingredients contained in the inhalation powder. People with such reactions as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat should get emergency medical care. 

Because Breo Ellipta is inhaled, it generally has less side effects and less severe side effects than systemic corticosteroids (steroid pills taken by mouth). However, serious side effects can still occur. Before taking Breo Ellipta, discuss potential side effects with your physician.

What drugs may interact with Breo Ellipta? 

Before using Breo Ellipta, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Some drugs that interact with Breo Ellipta include:

• Antifungals such as Nizoral (ketoconazole) or Sporanox (itraconazole)

• Beta-blockers such as Tenormin (atenolol) or Toprol XL (metoprolol)

• Biaxin (clarithromycin)

• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine

• Non-potassium-sparing diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide or Lasix (furosemide)

• Protease inhibitors such as ritonavir and saquinavir

• Tricyclic antidepressants such as Elavil (amitriptyline) or Pamelor (nortriptyline)

Is there an alternative for Breo Ellipta? 

Breo Ellipta contains two drugs, an inhaled steroid and a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA). Examples of other drugs that are similar include:

• Airduo (fluticasone and salmeterol)

• Dulera (mometasone and formoterol)

• Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol)

An inhaled steroid may be used alone or in combination with other medications. However, people who use a LABA must always also use an inhaled steroid. This can be done by using a combination product such as Breo Ellipta or one of the alternatives listed above—or two separate products, an inhaled steroid and a LABA, can both be used. Using a LABA alone, without a steroid, can cause an increased risk of asthma-related hospitalization and death.
