Fluticasone-salmeterol is the generic name for Advair HFA, which is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. A generic version of Advair HFA was recently approved. Check your local pharmacy for availability.
Your Advair HFA inhaler is a prescription medicine used for the maintenance treatment of asthma in patients 12 years of age and above. It helps prevent and control symptoms. However, it is not a rescue inhaler and will not work if you are having an asthma attack.
Tell your healthcare provider and pharmacist if you are using any prescription or OTC drugs, natural products, and/or vitamins, and if you have any current health problems. Advair HFA should not be taken by you if you are using another drug like this one if you are allergic to fluticasone, salmeterol, or any other part of the Advair HFA inhaler.
Rinse your mouth with water (and spit; do not swallow) a few minutes after using Advair HFA to prevent potential irritations and fungal infections.
Although this is not a complete list of side effects for Advair HFA, some of the most common side effects are upper respiratory tract infection, throat irritation, hoarseness, cough, headache, dizziness, indigestion, nausea, and vomiting.
While using your Advair HFA inhaler, you may also be at risk for a weakened immune system (immunosuppression), reduced adrenal function, sudden breathing problems, eye problems, osteoporosis, and other complications. Talk with your healthcare provider about the potential risks of using Advair HFA.
You should not take Advair HFA with other prescription medications that contain a LABA. A LABA is not to be confused with a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA). A SABA, such as albuterol, is used as a rescue inhaler to stop an asthma attack and can be used when you are using Advair HFA.
Advair HFA is not a bronchodilator or a rescue inhaler, so it should not be used if you have a sudden asthma attack.
Important: There have been reported cases of pneumonia when using Advair HFA by patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Seek medical advice immediately if you have an increase in mucus (sputum) production, if there is a change in mucus color, if you have a fever or chills if your coughing has increased, and if you have increased breathing problems.
Advair HFA contains two ingredients. One ingredient is fluticasone propionate, which is a steroid that decreases inflammation in the lungs. The other ingredient is salmeterol, a long-acting beta-agonist that helps open the lungs, making breathing easier.
Advair Diskus and Advair HFA contain the same ingredients: fluticasone and salmeterol.
Advair Diskus is FDA-approved for treating asthma in adults and children four years and older, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, in adults.
Advair HFA is FDA-approved for the maintenance treatment of asthma in adults and children 12 years and older.
Also, Advair Diskus is a dry powder inhaler. The medication is released when you take a fast, deep breath in through the inhaler. People with severe milk protein allergy should not use Advair Diskus. Advair HFA is a metered-dose inhaler that delivers the spray as a mist delivered to the lungs.
When taking Advair HFA, do not change your medication dose, or stop using your medication, except under your healthcare provider’s direction.
Avoid being near people who are sick or have an infection. If you are exposed to chickenpox or measles, call your healthcare provider for preventive treatment.
Advair HFA contains fluticasone as one of two ingredients and is inhaled by mouth. Flonase also contains fluticasone. However, Flonase is a nasal spray that is used for nasal allergy symptoms. Some individuals do use both medications. You can consult your healthcare provider for medical advice on allergy and asthma treatment.
