What is the brand name of Sucralfate?

Sucralfate is a generic prescription drug. The brand-name version of this drug is Carafate.

What is Sucralfate?

Sucralfate is an FDA-approved generic prescription medication used to treat and prevent duodenal ulcers. It may also be prescribed for other off-label uses according to your doctor. Sucralfate is believed to work by forming a coating over ulcers that protect the area from stomach acids and further injury. This protective coating helps ulcers heal more quickly and prevents new ulcers from forming.

Sucralfate comes in the form of an oral tablet and is usually taken two to four times daily. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Do not use more or less of this medication than what is recommended by your doctor.

Use Sucralfate daily as prescribed for maximum benefits. Continue using this medication even if you no longer feel ulcer pain. If you stop taking this medication before the time period prescribed by your doctor is over, you may be at risk of your ulcer pain returning and becoming worse. It may take as long as four to eight weeks for your ulcer to heal completely.

What are the side effects of Sucralfate?

Sucralfate may cause some unwanted side effects such as dry mouth, upset stomach, gas, constipation, or nausea. Other side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and back pain. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen.

Seek immediate medical attention if you begin to notice signs of serious side effects such as unusual or persistent fullness of the stomach, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain after meals, or difficulty swallowing. Allergic reactions to Sucralfate are possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face, mouth, or throat.

Consult your doctor or healthcare provider for medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Sucralfate as this is not a complete list of side effects. You should discuss other possible side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions with your doctor before starting treatment.

Talk to your healthcare professional for more drug information.
