What is the brand name of Olanzapine?

Olanzapine is a generic prescription drug that is produced by Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and other drug manufacturers. The brand-name versions of Olanzapine include Zyprexa, Zyprexa Zydis, and Zyprexa Relprevv.

What is Olanzapine?

Olanzapine is a prescription drug used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and children who are at least 13 years old. Olanzapine is sometimes combined with an antidepressant called fluoxetine to treat depression in adults and children aged 10 and older.

Olanzapine is part of a group of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It is believed to work to manage symptoms by balancing the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain. Olanzapine is available as a regular tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, and intramuscular injection.

Olanzapine should not be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Do not use Olanzapine to treat dementia, as it can increase the risk of death in older patients with dementia-related conditions. Before using Olanzapine, tell your doctor if you have a history of any medical conditions, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart problems, breast cancer, diabetes, seizures, and narrow-angle glaucoma.

Tell your doctor or healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while taking Olanzapine. Taking Olanzapine during the last three months of pregnancy may result in withdrawal symptoms, breathing problems, feeding problems, tremors, or other problems in an unborn baby. Inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding, as Olanzapine can pass into breast milk.

Tell your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Olanzapine may interact with other drugs, increasing the risk of adverse effects. Consult a healthcare provider for more information about drug interactions.

You should only use Olanzapine as prescribed. Do not suddenly stop using Olanzapine without consulting a healthcare provider.

What are the side effects of Olanzapine?

The most common side effects of Olanzapine include dry mouth, low energy levels, increased appetite, drowsiness, dizziness, shaking, and restlessness. Other side effects may include behavioral changes, weight gain, headache, and an upset stomach. Consult a healthcare provider if side effects persist or worsen.

Serious side effects of Olanzapine include an increased risk of mini-strokes, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, uncontrolled body movements (tardive dyskinesia), difficulty swallowing, seizures, and problems controlling body temperature. Allergic reactions are rare but possible while taking Olanzapine. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe rash, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects, and others may occur. Before starting treatment, consult your healthcare provider for medical advice and more information about side effects, warnings, and precautions.

Olanzapine alternatives

There are several alternatives to olanzapine. Another antipsychotic, such as aripiprazole (Abilify), risperidone (Risperdal), quetiapine (Seroquel), and ziprasidone (Geodon), may be prescribed instead of Olanzapine. Non-drug treatment options may include therapy, lifestyle changes, and psychosocial interventions. It's important to consult a healthcare provider on the most appropriate treatment, as treatment options can vary based on side effects, costs, and uses. In addition, medications may work differently for different individuals.
