What is Epitol?
Epitol is a prescription drug that controls particular types of seizures in patients with epilepsy, a nervous system disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Epitol is also prescribed to prevent nerve pain (neuralgia) in patients diagnosed with certain types of nerve pain disorders. Epitol is also sometimes prescribed off label to treat bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder.
All of these are conditions that involve overexcitement in the brain or in a nerve, that is, nerves are firing wildly and repetitively (epilepsy, mania, and certain types of nerve pain). The active ingredient in Epitol, carbamazepine, belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. Epitol prevents the repetitive and disorganized firing of nerves and so reduces the brain's excitability.
Epitol is taken as a tablet.
