Is there a generic of Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a brand-name drug made by LILLY. There is currently no generic substitute for Mounjaro.

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a prescription injectable medication used in adults with Type 2 diabetes, along with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control. Keeping blood sugar controlled helps delay or prevent complications related to diabetes. Mounjaro is injected once weekly and is meant to be used alongside a diet and exercise plan.

Mounjaro is part of a class of drugs known as dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists. It works by improving the release of insulin when blood sugar levels are high, suppressing the liver’s sugar production, and slowing stomach emptying to help control appetite and reduce food intake.

What are the side effects of Mounjaro?

Common side effects of Mounjaro may include:

  • Nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

  • Decreased appetite

  • Constipation

  • Indigestion

Serious side effects can also occur, including inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), changes in vision, kidney problems, and severe gastrointestinal issues. It’s important to contact a healthcare provider immediately if you experience symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or vision changes.

Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about potential side effects. You can also ask for more information about Mounjaro and a full list of side effects.

Are there any contraindications with Mounjaro?

Mounjaro has a black box warning, which is the most serious warning required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Mounjaro has caused thyroid tumors (cancer) in animal studies. It is not known if this medication causes thyroid cancer in humans. People with a history or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or people with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) should not take Mounjaro. People who take Mounjaro should be aware of thyroid tumor symptoms, such as a lump on the neck, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Mounjaro should not be taken by people who are allergic to this medication or any of its ingredients. It should also not be used in people with Type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Are there any known interactions with Mounjaro?

People who take Mounjaro in combination with either insulin or certain oral diabetes medications (such as glimepiride, glyburide, or glipizide) may require a dosage adjustment of the insulin or oral medication to lower the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels).

Mounjaro delays gastric emptying and may affect how certain oral medications are absorbed when they are taken around the same time. You can ask your doctor if you need to time your medications in a certain way while taking Mounjaro.

Women who take Mounjaro along with oral birth control pills should discuss birth control with their healthcare provider. The manufacturer recommends that patients should either switch to non-oral birth control or add a barrier method of contraception for four weeks after starting Mounjaro and for four weeks after each dose increase.

Before taking Mounjaro, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

Is Mounjaro approved for weight loss?

Currently, Mounjaro is not approved as a weight loss medication. However, clinical studies have shown that patients who took Mounjaro have lost a significant amount of weight. One study found that 50% of people taking a 10-mg dose and 57% taking a 15-mg dose of a medication lost 20% or more of their body weight, compared to only 3% of people who took a placebo. Because of the supporting data, the FDA has issued a Fast Track designation, meaning that the FDA will speed up the review process to approve Mounjaro as a weight-loss drug.

Which is better: Ozempic or Mounjaro?

Ozempic and Mounjaro are both approved to manage blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. However, they contain different active ingredients. Remember to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best treatment for your health needs.

What happens when you stop taking Mounjaro?

Discontinuing Mounjaro can lead to a reversal of its benefits, such as increased blood sugar levels and potential weight gain. Always consult with your healthcare provider before stopping any medication.
