Labetalol Hcl is a prescription drug used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Controlling your high blood pressure assists in preventing strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
Labetalol Hcl belongs to the non-cardioselective beta blockers drug class. Beta-adrenergic blocking agents prevent stimulation of the beta-adrenergic receptors at the nerve endings of the sympathetic nervous system and therefore reduces the activity of the heart. They prevent sympathetic stimulation of the heart and reduce systolic pressure, heart rate, cardiac contractility, and output, so decrease myocardial oxygen demand and increase exercise tolerance.
Beta-adrenergic blocking agents are used to treat angina, control abnormal heart rhythms, and reduce high blood pressure. However, non-cardioselective beta-blockers can cause significant bronchial constriction and could be harmful, especially in patients with respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
It is important to note that if you have asthma or COPD, very low blood pressure, or a serious heart condition such as second or third-degree heart block, severe heart failure, or very slow heartbeats then this drug is not recommended for you.
Dizziness, nausea, upset stomach, stuffy nose, or tingly feeling in your scalp are some of the more common side effects associated with using Labetalol Hcl. Though these common side effects usually do not require medical attention, there are rare effects that need immediate medical attention. If you experience one or more of the following then stop taking Labetalol Hcl and call your healthcare provider right away: a light-headed feeling, slow heart rate, weak pulse, fainting, slow breathing, shortness of breath, liver problems, or dangerously high blood pressure.
You should also seek emergency help if you experience an allergic reaction to this prescription medication. Signs of an allergic reaction include hives; difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to the FDA.
