Contrave (or naltrexone/bupropion HCl) is a brand-name weight-loss drug. The FDA has not approved a generic version of Contrave, but one could come on the market after 2030 based on patent expiration data. Generic drugs are often cheaper. Although there is not a generic alternative to Contrave, you can still save up to 80% with our discount card.
Contrave is a combination of naltrexone and bupropion. Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist that is used on its own to treat drug abuse and alcohol addiction. Bupropion (Wellbutrin is a popular brand name) is an antidepressant medication that's prescribed on its own to patients with major depressive disorder. Bupropion may also be prescribed for smoking cessation. However, as a combination drug, Contrave affects different parts of the brain to suppress appetite and balance natural chemicals called neurotransmitters.
Contrave is prescribed to overweight adults and patients with weight-related medical problems. Losing weight naturally decreases your risk of high blood pressure, heart problems, and Type 2 diabetes. For best results, you should pair this weight-loss medication with a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Contrave extended-release tablets contain 8 mg of naltrexone and 90 mg of bupropion. These tablets are usually taken by mouth twice per day with a low-calorie meal. Contrave should be taken regularly in order to be effective. Contrave tablets must be swallowed whole (not crushed or chewed), as it is an extended-release medication. Crushing or chewing an extended-release medicine will make the active ingredient release all at once, increasing the risk of seizures and other adverse effects.
Discuss your allergies with your doctor before taking Contrave. Some inactive ingredients of Contrave could cause an allergic reaction. To avoid serious side effects, you should also tell your doctor if you have a history of high blood pressure, heart disease or heart rate problems, mood disorders or suicidal thoughts, seizures, or if you are taking any type of opioid.
You may have difficulty sleeping if you take Contrave too late in the evening. Other side effects include digestive problems, such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and stomachaches, as well as headaches, dizziness, sweating, and dry mouth. Notify your doctor if these common side effects continue or worsen. Note: This is not a complete list of possible side effects.
