Amitiza is a brand name for lubiprostone that is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc. There are several generic versions of Amitiza currently available and approved by the FDA in the United States.
Amitiza is a member of the chloride channel activators drug class. This drug should not be mistaken for a laxative or a fiber. Amitiza helps to enhance the body's natural function by increasing fluid in the bowels to help you pass stool. Amitiza works locally in the intestines to regulate the fluid balance so you can avoid constipation. Amitiza does not alter electrolyte concentrations or produce tolerance as is sometimes seen with laxatives.
Amitiza is available in oral capsules and is supplied in 60, 8MCG Capsule. Amitiza is generally prescribed to be used twice daily for chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults, constipation caused by opioid pain medication, or for irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). Amitiza is an FDA-approved drug that can only be used by adults.
For IBS-C, Amitiza is only approved for use in adult women.
Amitiza should be taken with food and water. You should swallow the capsule whole and do not try to crush, chew, break, or open it.
You should seek medical advice if you have liver problems, if you suspect you have a bowel blockage, or if you are taking a diphenylheptane opioid such as methadone. You should not take Amitiza if you have severe diarrhea, as Amitiza can cause diarrhea.
Some common side effects of Amitiza that people experience include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, gas, indigestion, bloating, and abdominal pain. Although this is not a full list of possible side effects, using Amitiza may also result in a sore throat, headache, dizziness, swelling, back and joint pain, runny nose, and tiredness.
While an allergic reaction to Amitiza is rare, if you have symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, you should get emergency medical help immediately.
Consult your healthcare professional regarding more information about side effects.
Individuals with a bowel blockage, severe diarrhea, or liver problems, should tell their healthcare provider so they can determine if your dosage of Amitiza needs to be adjusted or changed.
Amitiza interacts with various medications. Before taking Amitiza, review your medication list with your healthcare provider, making sure to include all of the prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements you take. Examples of drug interactions with Amitiza include:
