Is there a generic of Linzess?

Linzess is the brand name for the drug called linaclotide. A generic version of Linzess has not been approved by the FDA yet. Generic versions of drugs are generally cheaper than their brand-name counterparts. You may be able to get a discount by using a free SingleCare Linzess savings card.

What is Linzess?

Linzess (linaclotide) is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). It works by increasing the amount of fluid in the intestines, which can help to soften stool and promote complete bowel movements. Linzess can also help relieve discomfort from bloating, abdominal pain, and strain.

Linzess is available as an oral capsule that is taken once daily. Linzess should be taken on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before the first meal of the day.

What dosages of Linzess are available?

Linzess is available as an oral capsule in the following strengths: 72 mcg, 145 mcg, and 290 mcg. Follow your doctor's medical advice for the appropriate dosage and use of this medication. The dosage may vary based on the medical condition being treated.

You may be advised to take Linzess once a day at least 30 minutes before your first meal of the day. You should take Linzess on an empty stomach.

Linzess capsules should be swallowed whole. If you have difficulties swallowing capsules, you can empty the contents into a small amount of water or applesauce. If you miss a dose of Linzess, skip your dose that day and continue taking Linzess at the next scheduled time.

What are the side effects of Linzess?

The most common side effects of Linzess include diarrhea, bloating, gas, and abdominal pain. These side effects may develop upon first starting treatment with Linzess. However, these side effects are usually temporary and should resolve on their own as you continue taking the medication.

Stop taking Linzess if these side effects persist or worsen, especially if you experience severe diarrhea. Seek medical attention right away if you experience severe abdominal pain, bright red, bloody stools, or stools that look like black tar. This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult with a healthcare provider on other possible side effects, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment with Linzess.

What should I avoid while taking Linzess?

Avoid crushing or chewing Linzess capsules. Remember to store Linzess at room temperature in the original bottle it is dispensed in. Keep Linzess out of the reach of children and pets. According to the FDA label, Linzess is not known to interact with many medications. However, that doesn’t mean drug interactions don’t exist with Linzess. Tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have or other medications you’re taking before using Linzess.

What diet is best with Linzess?

Healthcare providers may recommend a specific diet to people with IBS, including a low FODMAP diet. Following a low FODMAP diet may help improve symptoms of IBS and other bowel problems. Eating a variety of fibers and drinking plenty of water are also recommended to help manage IBS. Consult with a dietician or nutritionist for further dietary advice on managing your condition.

Why does Linzess cause diarrhea?

Linzess works by increasing the fluid in your intestines, which can soften stool and promote bowel movements. Diarrhea is the most common side effect of Linzess and often begins within the first two weeks of taking Linzess. Diarrhea can cause dehydration, so it's important that you continue drinking enough water. Inform your doctor right away if you experience severe diarrhea.

Is Linzess just a laxative?

Although Linzess can soften your stool and accelerate bowel movements, Linzess is not classified as a laxative. It is part of a group of drugs called guanylate cyclase-C agonists, which work locally in the intestines to increase fluid secretion. On the other hand, laxatives encompass different drugs that work in different ways, such as stimulating the digestive tract walls or increasing the absorption of water in stools.

What is a substitute for Linzess?

There are currently two drugs that are classified as guanylate cyclase-C agonists: Linzess (linaclotide) and Trulance (plecanatide). Both are used to treat IBS with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). If you are only occasionally experiencing constipation, your healthcare provider may suggest an over-the-counter laxative or stool softener. Your healthcare provider will determine the best treatment for you based on your symptoms and overall medical history.
