Is there a generic of Vyvanse?

Vyvanse is a trademark brand name for the stimulant, lisdexamfetamine dimesylate. There is not currently a generic version of Vyvanse. Generic Vyvanse is not expected to be available until sometime in 2023. Generics are often cheaper than brand-name medications, but you can still find Vyvanse savings by comparing prices on SingleCare. You can check with your pharmacist periodically to see if generic alternatives of Vyvanse have been approved.

What is Vyvanse?

Vyvanse is a central nervous system stimulant that restores the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Restoring these natural chemicals is shown to prevent hyperactivity and control impulses while allowing people with ADHD to pay attention and focus. Vyvanse can also be used to treat binge eating disorders in adults.

What doses of Vyvanse are available?

Vyvanse is available in capsules and chewable tablets in 10 mg increments from the lowest dose of 10 mg to the maximum dose of 70 mg (capsules) or 60 mg (chewable tablets). If needed, your healthcare provider may adjust your dosage in increments of 10 mg or 20 mg at weekly intervals—or he or she may occasionally suggest stopping your Vyvanse medication altogether (sometimes referred to as a drug holiday) to evaluate changes in your behavior and whether Vyvanse is still needed.

Vyvanse is a controlled substance and should only be taken according to your doctor's specific medical advice. Vyvanse is taken once daily in the morning with or without food.

How quickly does Vyvanse start working? How long does it last?

The ingredient in Vyvanse, lisdexamfetamine, must be metabolized in the body to its active form, dextroamphetamine. The medication starts working in about 1.5 to 2 hours, and reaches its highest level in about 3.5 hours. Vyvanse can work for up to approximately 14 hours.

What are the side effects of Vyvanse?

Vyvanse is a controlled substance and can lead to addiction or dependence. Do not increase your dose of Vyvanse without consulting your doctor. Never take it more often than prescribed or use it longer than prescribed.

Common side effects of Vyvanse can cause difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite or weight loss, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, or vomiting.

Contact your physician immediately if you experience serious side effects like an irregular heartbeat, blood pressure changes, agitation, behavior and mood changes, sweating, shivering, or seizures. These could be symptoms of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome, which can occur with Vyvanse and is more likely to occur if you also take an SSRI or SNRI antidepressant.

Circulation problems may also result in numbness, sensitivity, or color changes to fingers or toes. These could be symptoms of Raynaud’s phenomenon, which requires immediate medical care.

Tell your doctor if you or your family has a history of heart problems. Taking Vyvanse can increase heart rate and cause high blood pressure, leading to heart attack, stroke, or sudden death.

Get emergency medical help if you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat) or a serious skin reaction (fever, burning eyes, sore throat, blistering or peeling skin, red or purple rash).

Note: This is not a full list of possible side effects. Ask a healthcare professional for additional information concerning adverse effects and additional safety information of Vyvanse.

Vyvanse interactions

Before taking Vyvanse, you should consult your doctor if you're currently taking any of the following medications:

  • Adderall or any other medication containing amphetamine or dextroamphetamine

  • Antacids

  • Caffeine

  • Antidepressants or anxiety medication

  • Linezolid or any other monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

  • Over-the-counter allergy medicine

  • Over-the-counter cold medicine

  • Blood pressure medications

Note: This is not a full list of interactions. Before taking Vyvanse, tell your doctor about all of the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

Can Vyvanse and alcohol be used together?

Although Vyvanse and alcohol do not chemically interact, it is best to avoid alcohol while taking Vyvanse. Combining the two can increase the risk for heart problems, Vyvanse overdose, or alcohol poisoning. It can also lower inhibition, which can lead to risky behaviors like driving while intoxicated. If you have questions about alcohol intake, consult your healthcare provider.

Who should not take Vyvanse?

Before taking Vyvanse, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions and medical history, family history, and allergies to medications. Vyvanse should not be used in:

  • People with an allergy to lisdexamfetamine or other amphetamines

  • People who have used an MAO inhibitor drug within the past 14 days

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • People with severe cardiovascular (heart) disease or other heart problems

  • People with severe arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)

Which is better: Vyvanse or Adderall?

Your healthcare provider will determine whether Vyvanse or Adderall is better for you and your particular condition.

Vyvanse and Adderall are both stimulant medications that can be used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. In addition to the treatment of ADHD, Vyvanse is approved by the FDA to treat moderate to severe binge eating disorder; Adderall can also be prescribed to treat narcolepsy.

Vyvanse is metabolized and converted to dextroamphetamine, while Adderall is a combination drug (amphetamine-dextroamphetamine) that does not need to be metabolized in order to begin working. Therefore, Vyvanse is typically better for patients who need a long-lasting stimulant (up to 14 hours) whereas Adderall is a shorter-acting stimulant that often requires several doses daily. Adderall XR is also available, which is an extended-release form of Adderall that’s taken once daily.

What are some Vyvanse alternatives?

Examples of other stimulant ADHD medications include:

  • Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine)

  • Concerta, Metadate CD, Ritalin, and other brand names (methylphenidate)

  • Evekeo (amphetamine)

  • Focalin, Focalin XR (dexmethylphenidate)

  • Mydayis (mixed salts of a single-entity amphetamine product)

Examples of nonstimulant drugs used for ADHD include:

  • Intuniv (guanfacine)

  • Kapvay (clonidine)

  • Qelbree (viloxazine)

  • Strattera (atomoxetine)
