Is there a generic of Eliquis?

Eliquis is the brand name for apixaban. It is currently manufactured by Bristol-Meyer Squibb and marketed by Pfizer. Generic Eliquis has been approved by the FDA; however, it is not yet available for purchase in the United States. The generic version may not become available until 2026 due to an extension of the original drug patent. Other brand-name blood thinners may be available as alternatives to Eliquis. Always consult a doctor for medical advice to decide which anticoagulant medicine is right for you.

What is Eliquis?

If you have a certain irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation or AFib) or have recently undergone a hip or knee replacement surgery, your doctor may prescribe Eliquis. In Afib, an irregular heart rhythm can cause blood to pool in the heart chambers, which can lead to the formation of blood clots and an increased risk of stroke. Eliquis is the FDA-approved brand name for apixaban, which is an anticoagulant or blood thinner. In addition to treating Afib, Eliquis is also approved to prevent and treat blood clots, particularly in the veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis or DVT) and lungs (pulmonary embolism).

Eliquis works by blocking a specific blood-clotting protein called Factor Xa to make the blood less likely to clot. Blood clots that form in the blood vessels of the legs and lungs can travel throughout the body and increase your risk of stroke. If you've recently had a blood clot, your doctor might prescribe Eliquis to prevent another clot from forming. Eliquis is usually taken as an oral tablet twice daily.

What doses of Eliquis are available?

Eliquis is available as an oral tablet in strengths of 2.5 mg and 5 mg. Eliquis is commonly taken by mouth twice daily or every 12 hours, so you will likely receive a 30-day supply of 60 tablets. Follow your doctor's instructions for the dosage and use of this prescription medication. Some factors that your doctor will consider when prescribing Eliquis include your age, medical condition, kidney function, and, if applicable, the type of surgery that you had.

What are the side effects of Eliquis?

Eliquis is a blood thinner, so side effects could include susceptibility to bruising and minor bleeding such as nosebleeds or bleeding from the gums.

Contact your doctor right away if you experience:

  • Unusual bleeding that lasts a long time

  • Brown, red, or pink urine

  • Red or black stools

  • Coughing up or vomiting blood

  • Unexpected pain or swelling

  • Dizziness

  • Weakness

  • Headaches

Allergic reactions to Eliquis are rare, but you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience side effects such as chest pain, swelling of the face or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult with a healthcare provider about other possible side effects, warnings, and precautions associated with Eliquis.

Which food should I avoid while taking Eliquis?

Before taking Eliquis, you should discuss possible dietary restrictions with your doctor. They may suggest moderation or avoidance of alcohol and grapefruit or products containing grapefruit juice. Alcohol may have blood-thinning properties that could lead to increased bleeding with Eliquis. Grapefruit may increase the levels of Eliquis in the blood, which may increase the risk of bleeding.

Eliquis may interact with other medications, such as additional blood thinner medications, such as over-the-counter aspirin. Consult your healthcare provider for other possible food and drug interactions with Eliquis.

What can I take instead of Eliquis?

Other blood thinners are available that work in a similar way to Eliquis. Other examples of Factor Xa inhibitors include Xarelto (rivaroxaban), Savaysa (edoxaban), and Arixtra (fondaparinux). There are currently no generic versions of Xarelto and Savaysa available for purchase. Therefore, brand-name Eliquis alternatives may be just as expensive as Eliquis.

Warfarin is a common alternative to Eliquis since it is widely available as a generic. Warfarin is generally much cheaper than Eliquis. However, the use of warfarin requires more close monitoring to manage the risk of bleeding. Certain foods with vitamin K, such as kale and other leafy green vegetables, can oppose the actions of warfarin. Dietary restrictions may be needed while taking warfarin.
