Xalatan is a prescription medication used to treat high pressure in the eye caused by open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. High pressure in the eye can increase the risk of complications, including visual problems and blindness. This medication works by regulating the flow of fluid within the eye, which results in lower pressure within the eye.
This medication comes in the form of eye drops, which can be applied to the affected eye once daily in the evening. Your doctor will usually prescribe a dose based on an assessment of your current medical condition, drugs you are already taking, and your response to treatment. You should only use this medication as prescribed by your doctor.
Wash your hands before applying eye drops. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. If you wear contact lenses, you should remove them before administering the medication. Wait for at least 15 minutes after using Xalatan before replacing your contact lenses.
Common side effects resulting from the use of Xalatan may include blurred vision, burning, stinging, itching, redness of the eye, and a feeling as though something is in the eye. Other side effects include dry eye, eyelid crusting or discomfort, and increased sensitivity to light. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any side effects and they persist or worsen.
Xalatan may cause discoloration of the eyelashes or color portion of your eye (iris). This discoloration may occur over months to years. Color changes may be permanent. Notify your doctor if this occurs and monitor it through regular eye exams.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
