What is Tri-Sprintec?

Tri-Sprintec is a hormonal oral contraceptive drug used to prevent pregnancy. It is also approved to treat acne. Tri-Sprintec contains norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol. It is a triphasic birth control method that contains three different dose levels of the active pills: 7 gray pills containing 0.18 mg of norgestimate and 0.035 mg of ethinyl estradiol each, 7 light blue pills containing 0.215 mg of norgestimate and 0.035 mg of ethinyl estradiol each, and 7 blue pills containing 0.25 mg of norgestimate and 0.035 mg of ethinyl estradiol. There are also 7 white placebo pills included.

Tri-Sprintec is supplied as a 28-day regimen. The active colored tablets are taken starting from day 1 to day 21 of your menstrual cycle. This is then followed by a week of taking the placebo pills. After all 28 pills are taken, a new course of Tri-Sprintec can be started the next day.

Oral contraceptive pills are highly effective for preventing pregnancy. However, they do not protect against HIV (AIDS) or other STDs. This medication should only be used as prescribed by a physician. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have or other medications you may be taking, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, or herbal supplements, before starting Tri-Sprintec. 

Tell your doctor if you have a history of high blood pressure, blood clots, heart attack, stroke, chest pain, breast cancer or cancer of the lining of the uterus, cervix, or vagina, liver problems, diabetes, depression, kidney disease, or high cholesterol before using Tri-Sprintec.

What are the side effects of Tri-Sprintec?

The most common side effects of Tri-Sprintec include menstrual changes, irregular vaginal bleeding, fluid retention (edema), nausea, vomiting, changes in appetite, and headache. Tri-Sprintec may also cause dizziness, nervousness, depression, breast tenderness, and weight gain. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience any side effects while taking Tri-Sprintec. 

Serious side effects of Tri-Sprintec may include blood clots, heart attack, stroke, liver tumors, gallbladder disease, breast cancer, and high blood pressure. Women who are over the age of 35 years old and smoke cigarettes are not recommended to take Tri-Sprintec.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sharp chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, severe headache, fainting, loss of vision, breast lumps, severe abdominal pain, weakness or lack of energy, or yellowing of the skin or eyes while taking Tri-Sprintec.
