What is Kariva?

Kariva is a combination birth control medication used by women to prevent pregnancy. Kariva works by preventing ovulation or the release of an egg for fertilization by sperm in the menstrual cycle. Kariva affects the lining of the uterus wall and prevents any fertilized eggs from attaching itself to the uterus or womb. This is done as a result of Kariva thickening the vaginal fluid so any egg that is not attached to the walls of the uterus or womb passes out during menstruation.

Do not use Kariva or any other birth control pills if you have: uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease or other heart problems, diabetes, other circulation problems, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, and severe migraines.

Before using Kariva tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have, especially if you have a history of heart attack, a stroke, a blood clot, breast cancer, cervical cancer or vaginal cancer. If you are over the age of 35 and you are a smoker, check with your healthcare provider to ensure it is safe for you to use Kariva. You also need to tell your doctor about all the medications you are using including all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements.

You should only use Kariva as it was prescribed. You need to follow all directions on your prescription label to ensure this medication works as it should. Do not take larger or smaller amounts of Kariva, do not use this oral contraceptive for longer than recommended.

What are the side effects of Kariva?

Common side effects of Kariva include nausea or vomiting, breast tenderness, acne or darkening facial skin, and weight gain.

If you have swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet, mood changes or symptoms of depression, such as trouble sleeping or tired feeling, a breast lump or worsened migraines you should call your doctor right away.

If you have signs of an allergic reaction after taking Kariva, you should get immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, throat, and tongue.
