Is there a generic of Balcoltra?

Balcoltra is a brand-name oral contraceptive manufactured by Avion Pharmaceuticals. There is currently no generic version of Balcoltra.

What is Balcoltra?

Balcoltra is a brand-name combined oral contraceptive approved by the FDA for the prevention of pregnancy. This oral birth control pill contains a combination of levonorgestrel, a progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, and estrogen. These two female hormones prevent the release of an egg, increase the thickness of the cervical mucus, and change the uterine lining. This pill may also regulate your periods and decrease their severity. Balcoltra also contains ferrous bisglycinate, an iron supplement.

Balcoltra is taken orally, and it works best when taken around the same time each day. Skipping doses will lower the effect of the medication. A pack of Balcoltra contains 21 active tablets containing 0.10 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol. It also contains 7 inactive placebo tablets containing 36.5 mg of ferrous bisglycinate.

Always consult your doctor on possible interactions of Balcoltra with other medications, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements. Do not use birth control pills if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart problems, liver problems, or circulation problems. This medication is not recommended for women over the age of 35 who smoke.

For additional information on the correct usage of this medication, consult with a healthcare provider.

What are the side effects of Balcoltra?

The most common side effects include nausea, headache, abdominal cramps, breast tenderness or discomfort, irregular vaginal bleeding, and acne. Other common side effects include vaginal infections and mood changes, such as depression.

Severe allergic reactions to Balcoltra are not common. You should contact your healthcare professional if you experience breast lumps, mood changes, unusual vaginal bleeding, dark urine, high blood sugar levels, or yellowing of eyes or skin.

The use of this birth control pill can increase the risk of blood clots, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, or blood clots in the lungs. Immediately seek medical attention if you experience pain in the chest, a severe headache, shortness of breath, sudden vision changes, or trouble speaking.

Other side effects of Balcoltra may include liver problems, high blood pressure, changes in blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and a possible increased risk of breast or cervical cancer.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.
