Levoxyl typically is covered through Medicare, according to medicare.gov, but copays may vary per plan. It is usually in a higher tier than its generic version, levothyroxine, according to Humana, and, therefore, more expensive. Levothyroxine is usually no more than a few dollars through Medicare. However, the doses are very precise for these medications, so it is not recommended to switch between brand or generic versions of them. If interested in switching from Levoxyl to levothyroxine, speak to the prescribing physician first.
Levothyroxine sodium is the generic version of Levoxyl. You can also use our free coupon card for savings on generic Levoxyl.
Levoxyl is a thyroid hormone supplement used to treat hypothyroidism. It is also used to treat goiter and thyroid cancer.
There are some common side effects of Levoxyl that are generally caused by too high of a dose. These include:
Fatigue
Increased appetite
Weight loss
Heat intolerance or excessive sweating
Headache
Hyperactivity
Anxiety
Insomnia
Muscle weakness or cramps
Increased heart rate
Arrhythmias
Difficulty breathing
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Abdominal cramps
Hair loss
Menstrual irregularities
Decreased bone mineral density
Generally, Levoxyl’s side effects are minor and can be controlled by adjusting the daily dosage. However, there are a few serious side effects that require seeking medical attention immediately. These include:
Severe hypersensitivity reactions
Cardiac events, usually in older patients or those with underlying cardiovascular disease
Acute adrenal crisis in those with adrenal insufficiency
Most of the severe side effects occur in people with an increased risk of them, such as those with cardiac conditions or adrenal insufficiency. That is why it is important to speak to a healthcare provider about all other conditions that may be present and any medications that are taken. Levoxyl dosages will not be the same for everyone. They may require adjustments and working with a healthcare provider to figure out the optimal dose.
