What is Addyi?

Addyi is a prescription medication used to treat premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder, a medical condition characterized by low sexual desire. The condition is typically diagnosed by a healthcare provider and is identified by low libido, that causes distress or interpersonal problems. Addyi is not prescribed for low sexual desire caused by a medical or mental health problem, medication side effects, or problems in relationships. 

The exact way Addyi works to improve sex drive is unknown. However, Addyi may balance certain chemicals in the brain involved in sexual desire. It is believed to increase dopamine and norepinephrine (chemicals that increase sexual desire) while reducing serotonin (a chemical that inhibits sexual desire).

What are the side effects of Addyi?

Addyi may cause side effects. The most common side effects of Addyi include:

  • Dizziness

  • Drowsiness

  • Fatigue

  • Insomnia

  • Nausea

  • Dry mouth

Addyi may cause serious side effects, such as severe low blood pressure and loss of consciousness, particularly if taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Clinical trials have shown that Addyi may start to improve symptoms after about four weeks, but it may take up to eight weeks to see noticeable improvements.
