Is there a generic of Descovy?

Gilead Sciences Inc. manufactures Descovy. There is no generic version of Descovy at this time.

What is Descovy?

Descovy is a combination of emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide. It can be used in combination with other medications to treat HIV-1 infection. Descovy can also be used as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in at-risk individuals to reduce the risk of HIV-1 from sexual intercourse. However, this does not include people at risk from injection drug use or receptive vaginal sex (penis in vagina sex). Descovy does not prevent other types of sexually transmitted infections. Practice safer sex with a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of getting sexually transmitted infections. Descovy does not prevent pregnancy.

Descovy is FDA-approved for:

  • HIV-1 treatment in adults and pediatric patients who weigh at least 77 pounds (in combination with other antiretroviral medications)

  • HIV-1 treatment in combination with certain other medications in pediatric patients who weigh at least 30.8 pounds and less than 77 pounds

  • HIV-1 pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in at-risk adults and adolescents who weigh at least 77 pounds, to lower the risk of HIV-1 from sexual intercourse. This does not include people at risk from injection drug use or receptive vaginal sex (penis in vagina sex)

It should be noted that Descovy alone is not a complete treatment for HIV. If used alone, your treatment will not be as effective as it should be. Additionally, this drug is not a cure for HIV or AIDS and will not prevent the virus from being transmitted.

You should not take Descovy in doses that have not been prescribed by your doctor or discontinue use, if even for a short period unless instructed to do so by your doctor or healthcare provider. Doing this may result in an increase in the amount of virus in your body, and possibly make the infection resistant to treatment. Refill your prescription several days before you need it to ensure that you never run out of medicine.

Descovy has a black box warning, the most serious warning required by the FDA. If you have ever had hepatitis B, the virus may become active or worsen after you stop taking Descovy. Your doctor will order blood tests to check your liver (as well as other tests) before starting Descovy and for a few months after you stop taking it.

The warning also states that before using Descovy for HIV-1 PrEP, you must be confirmed to be HIV-negative just before starting the medicine and at least every 3 months while taking the medicine.

What doses of Descovy are available?

Descovy is available as a 200 mg/25 mg oral tablet and a 120 mg/15 mg oral tablet. The first number indicates the dosage of emtricitabine, and the second number indicates the dosage of tenofovir alafenamide.

What are the side effects of Descovy?

Descovy can cause some serious side effects, some of these include worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection, autoimmune disorders, kidney problems, the buildup of lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), severe liver problems, and reduced bone mineral density, among others. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.

Though these serious side effects can occur, the most commonly reported ones are nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, weight loss, depression, anxiety, trouble sleeping, unusual dreams, and headache—as well as pain, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet.

If any of these side effects persist or worsen, you should seek immediate medical attention. You should seek medical advice from your healthcare professional before using Descovy to ensure it is right for you.

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur while using Descovy. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice about possible side effects of this medicine.

Who should not take Descovy?

Before taking Descovy, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and medical history, as well as all of the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

You should not take Descovy if you are allergic to emtricitabine, tenofovir, or any ingredient in the medication.

People who do not know their HIV-1 status or those with positive HIV-1 status should not take Descovy for HIV-1 PrEP.

Individuals with a certain degree of kidney problems may not be able to take Descovy.

If you are taking Descovy to treat HIV-1, you should not breastfeed.

Certain drugs interact with Descovy. Some examples include:

  • Antivirals such as Valtrex (valacyclovir) or Zovirax (acyclovir)

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

  • Anticonvulsants such as Tegretol (carbamazepine), Trileptal (oxcarbazepine), phenobarbital, and Dilantin (phenytoin)

  • The supplement St. John’s wort

  • Rifampin

This is not a full list of drug interactions, and others may occur. Consult your healthcare professional for more information about drug interactions and how they may affect you.
