What is Isentress?
Isentress is an FDA-approved prescription antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV. This medication works by preventing the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying in your body. This lowers the risk of getting HIV-related complications, such as new infections and cancer, and improves your quality of life. This medication is also known as an integrase inhibitor.
Isentress is not a cure for HIV infection. To decrease the risk of spreading HIV, you should continue your HIV medications and always use a protective barrier during sex such as latex or polyurethane condoms.
This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet as well as granules for oral suspension, and it can be taken with or without food. Your doctor will recommend a dose based on an assessment of your medical condition and your body's response to treatment.
Ensure you tell your doctor about all medications that you're currently using before you start taking this drug. Avoid the use of antacids containing aluminum or magnesium while taking Isentress. These drugs reduce the effectiveness of Isentress.
What are the side effects of Isentress?
Isentress may cause some unwanted side effects such as headaches, nausea, and trouble sleeping. These effects are usually common when first taking Isentress and usually go away as your body adjusts to the medication.
