What is Truvada?

Truvada is a prescription drug that contains a combination of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. This drug is used to treat HIV infections and works by interfering with enzymes that allow HIV cells to multiply. Therefore, it slows down and even stops the production of new virus cells.

Note: Truvada is not a cure for HIV or AIDS, but it can be used to treat adults and children as young as 12 years old. Truvada cannot prevent HIV or AIDS. Prevention can only be done through safe sex practices.

What doses of Truvada are available?

The recommended dosage for Truvada is based on various factors such as age, body weight, and the nature of your infection. Your doctor will need to assess these factors before recommending a specific dosage. Truvada is available in:

  • 100 mg emtricitabine/150 mg tenofovir

  • 133 mg emtricitabine/200 mg tenofovir

  • 167 mg emtricitabine/250 mg tenofovir

  • 200 mg emtricitabine/300 mg tenofovir

What are the side effects of Truvada?
