What is Reyataz?
Reyataz is a brand-name prescription drug used to control the virus that causes HIV/AIDS. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes HIV/AIDS, is a very primitive virus called a retrovirus, so the active ingredient in Reyataz, atazanavir, belongs to a class of drugs called antiretroviral drugs.
Reyataz blocks a protein the HIV virus needs to make a new virus, so Reyataz over time reduces the amount of HIV in the body. Because the HIV virus attacks and weakens the immune system, reducing the amount of HIV virus strengthens the immune system and helps prevent the opportunistic and life-threatening illnesses common to HIV/AIDS.
Reyataz is taken as a capsule or oral solution with food. The oral solution is intended for children who have difficulty swallowing capsules and can be prescribed to children as young as 3 months.
What are the side effects of Reyataz?
