Dovato is made by the pharmaceutical company ViiV Healthcare Company. It contains two ingredients: lamivudine (a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor, or NRTI) and dolutegravir (an integrase strand transfer inhibitor, or INSTI).
Dovato is used alone as a complete treatment regimen. It is used to treat HIV infection in people who have never taken HIV medication before, or in people who have responded well to—and have no history of poor response to—previous HIV medicine regimens.
Dovato works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. It does not cure HIV but may decrease the chance of developing AIDS and HIV-related illnesses like cancer or serious infections. Dovato should be used along with lifestyle changes and safer sex.
Common side effects of Dovato include:
Headache
Nausea
Diarrhea
Trouble sleeping
Fatigue
Anxiety
If you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help. Other serious side effects may occur, such as liver problems. If you have ever had hepatitis B it may become active and resistant to medication while you are taking Dovato, or it may get worse after you stop taking Dovato. Your healthcare provider will monitor your liver function.

You should not take Dovato if you have ever had an allergic reaction to either dolutegravir or lamivudine. Also, people who take dofetilide should not take Dovato.
Taking Dovato during the first trimester of pregnancy may cause harm to the baby. You must use effective birth control while taking Dovato. You can ask your healthcare provider for additional information and medical advice about effective birth control. You should not breastfeed while taking Dovato.
Before taking Dovato, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
Dovato should never be taken with the antiarrhythmic drug dofetilide.
