What is Toujeo Solostar?

Toujeo Solostar is a prescription medication used to control blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Toujeo Solostar can help manage diabetes and prevent long-term complications such as kidney damage, vision loss/blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual dysfunction.

Insulin glargine, the active ingredient in Toujeo Solostar, is a type of insulin that is similar to the insulin that is produced naturally by the body. It is a basal insulin, or a long-acting insulin that is released slowly throughout the day and night. Toujeo works by helping blood sugar (glucose) get into cells so the body can use it for energy. A short-acting insulin may be prescribed in addition to Toujeo Solostar to manage blood sugar levels after meals.

Before taking this prescription drug, inform your doctor or healthcare professional about all your medical conditions, especially if you have liver problems, kidney problems, or heart failure. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, before using Toujeo Solostar. You should never share your Toujeo Solostar pen(s) with other people, even if the needle has been changed. This medication should not be used if you have low blood sugar/severe hypoglycemia, allergies to insulin or any of the ingredients in Toujeo Solostar, or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Follow the dosage and administration instructions recommended by your healthcare provider. If you are switching from Lantus to Toujeo Solostar, your doctor may recommend a higher daily dose of Toujeo Solostar than your previous daily dose of Lantus. Your doctor should also be informed about other medicines you take, especially TZDs (thiazolidinediones), beta-blockers, other prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and supplements. Certain medications may interact with Toujeo Solostar or increase the risk of adverse effects.

What are the side effects of Toujeo Solostar?

The most common side effects of Toujeo Solostar include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), weight gain, and injection site reactions, such as rash, itching, redness, and swelling around the area of injection. Toujeo Solostar can also cause sodium retention, edema (fluid retention), and lipodystrophy (thickening of skin tissue around the area of injection over time). Consult a healthcare provider if side effects develop, persist, or worsen.

Allergic reactions are rare but life-threatening. You should be aware of the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as rash, hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
