Novolog Flexpen is an FDA-approved insulin pen used to treat high blood sugar (glucose) in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a fast-acting insulin that helps reduce glucose spikes after eating. Novolog Flexpen can be used in adults and children two years or older.
Controlling high glucose levels can help prevent long-term complications from diabetes, including kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. By controlling your diabetes mellitus, you can also lessen your chances of heart attack and stroke, especially if you have a history of heart disease.
Although similar to natural insulin produced in the body, Novolog Flexpen contains insulin aspart, which is man-made insulin. Novolog Flexpen works by helping glucose get into cells so your body can use it for energy. Typically, Novolog Flexpen is used with an intermediate or long-acting insulin product.
Common side effects of Novolog Flexpen include injection site reactions such as pain, redness, irritation, and weight gain. Other side effects may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal or chest pain.
Serious side effects of Novolog Flexpen may include symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), such as confusion, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, sweating, tremors, and seizures (convulsions). Before taking Novolog Flexpen, be sure you understand how often to check your blood sugar and what to do if your blood sugar is low.
Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of these or other side effects. Before using Novolog Flexpen, you should seek medical advice to discuss all possible side effects.
Serious allergic reactions are rare but require emergency medical help. Symptoms include hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Novolog Flexpen is a rapid-acting insulin. It starts working about 15 minutes after it is injected.
Your health care provider will instruct you on how to use Novolog Flexpen. It is generally injected before meals and/or to bring down elevated blood sugar.
Store unopened Novolog Flexpen in the refrigerator. Do not freeze, and do not store near the cooling element in the refrigerator. Or, you can store it at room temperature, but it must be used within 28 days.
Once opened, store at room temperature (first, remove the needle and place it in a sharps container) and use within 28 days.
You should never share your Novolog Flexpen, as this can lead to the transmission of blood-borne pathogens.
Consult the manufacturer, your healthcare provider, or your pharmacist for more information on the proper way to dispose of Novolog Flexpen medication.
