What is Lantus Solostar?

Lantus Solostar pen is approved by the FDA that contains long-acting, or basal, insulin. It is used by patients with diabetes to improve blood sugar control. Lantus Solostar insulin pens can be used in adults and children with Type 1 diabetes and adults with Type 2 diabetes. It is approved for use in children who are at least six years old. 

Do not use Lantus Solostar prescription medication if you are allergic to insulin glargine. You should not inject Lantus Solostar when you have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Is Lantus Solostar a Tier 3 drug?

What are the side effects of Lantus Solostar?

The most common side effect of Lantus Solostar is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Other possible side effects that people experience include upper respiratory tract infection, headache, muscle pain, cough, swelling of the arms and legs, and diarrhea. It is important to change, or rotate, injection sites, each time you use Lantus Solostar, to avoid injection site lumps and pits. 

In some cases, people who take a drug called Actos (pioglitazone) with Lantus Solostar can develop new or worsening heart failure. If you have symptoms of shortness of breath, fatigue, and/or fast weight gain, tell your physician right away.

If you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help right away.

What is an alternative for Lantus Solostar? 

Lantus Solostar is a basal, or long-acting, insulin. Besides Lantus Solostar, examples of other basal insulins include:

  • Basaglar and Toujeo (also contain insulin glargine)

  • Levemir (insulin detemir)

  • Tresiba (insulin degludec): this is the longest-lasting basal insulin, and can last up to 42 hours.
