Is there a generic of Lantus?

Lantus is the registered brand name for insulin glargine. A generic version is not currently available. Generic drugs are usually cheaper than their brand-name counterparts. You can talk to your healthcare provider about cheaper insulin alternatives. Semglee (insulin glargine-yfgn) is an FDA-approved insulin that is interchangeable with Lantus. Your healthcare provider can help determine which form of insulin glargine is best for you based on your overall condition.

What is Lantus?

Lantus is used to treat Type 2 diabetes in adults and Type 1 diabetes in adults and children aged six years or older. Insulin glargine (the generic name of Lantus) is similar to human insulin and replaces the insulin the body is unable to make or use. Insulin glargine is a long-acting insulin that regulates blood sugar levels throughout the day. Like other insulins, Lantus helps the body use blood sugar for energy. By balancing blood sugar levels, Lantus also helps prevent complications from diabetes, such as kidney damage, vision and nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual dysfunction.

What doses of Lantus are available?

Lantus is a solution that is injected under the skin (subcutaneously). It is available as a 100 units/mL (U-100) injection that comes in a 10 mL multiple-dose vial or 3 mL prefilled pen. It Lantus is usually administered once daily at the same time every day.

Your healthcare provider will give you medical advice and show you how to inject this type of insulin. Injecting cold insulin could be painful, so you may want to store Lantus at room temperature. Always wash your hands before handling Lantus, and make sure the injection site is clean and dry.

Measure Lantus carefully, as your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. A small change in dosage can have a dramatic effect on your blood sugar levels, which can increase the risk of adverse effects.

Note: The solution should be clear and colorless. Discard vials that have particles or clumps.

You may inject it into your abdomen, upper arms, or thighs. You should alternate the areas of the skin that you inject Lantus.

What are the side effects of Lantus?

Common side effects of Lantus include injection site reactions, such as redness, itching, or swelling around the area of injection. Other side effects may include weight gain, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and skin thickening or pits at the site of injection (lipodystrophy).

Certain symptoms, such as a severe rash, itching, swelling, or shortness of breath, could indicate an allergic reaction. Seek medical attention right away if you experience an allergic reaction while using Lantus.

A more serious side effect of this prescription medication is a decrease in potassium in the blood (hypokalemia). Muscle cramps, weakness, and an irregular heartbeat are all warning signs of low potassium. Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of these symptoms.

Lantus may cause hypoglycemia. Signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia include sweating, shaking, or hunger. Other symptoms include a racing heartbeat, blurred vision, dizziness, and tingling in the hands or face. Monitor your blood sugar while you're taking Lantus and let your doctor know if you experience dips or spikes in blood sugar. Your dosage may need to be adjusted.

Taking certain diabetes medications called thiazolidinediones with Lantus may increase the risk of heart failure. Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart failure or other medical conditions before using Lantus.

This is not a complete list of side effects.

Does Lantus make you gain weight?

Weight gain is a possible side effect of many types of insulin—not just Lantus. Like many diabetes medications, Lantus is often prescribed along with a recommended diet and exercise plan. Following the right diet and exercise plan may help reduce the risk of weight gain. Weight gain may also be a sign of new or worse symptoms of heart failure, which may occur while using Lantus with thiazolidinediones medications. Consult with your healthcare provider if you have concerns about weight gain with Lantus.

Should Lantus be taken in the morning or at night?

Lantus can be taken at any time of day, although it’s usually taken in the morning. A critical aspect of treatment is taking Lantus at the same time every day. As a long-acting insulin, Lantus can help control blood sugar levels throughout the day. Ask your healthcare provider for advice on the best time to take Lantus.

Does Lantus have to be refrigerated?

If it’s unopened, Lantus should be stored in the refrigerator. Once opened, Lantus vials can be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to 28 days. Discard Lantus after 28 days of being opened. Lantus prefilled pens should be stored at room temperature once they’re opened. Ask your pharmacist for the best practices for handling Lantus.

What insulin is comparable to Lantus?

Toujeo SoloStar and Basaglar Kwikpen are brand-name insulins that contain insulin glargine. Brand-name versions of insulin glargine can differ in device type (vial and syringe versus prefilled insulin pen), available strengths, and costs.

Other long-acting insulins that work similarly to Lantus include Tresiba (insulin degludec) and Levemir (insulin detemir). Tresiba may be effective for up to 42 hours, while Lantus has effects that last for up to 24 hours. Levemir may be prescribed to be taken twice daily, while Tresiba and Lantus are usually administered once daily.

Your healthcare provider will help determine the best treatment option for you.
