Repatha Sureclick is a brand-name prescription drug with evolocumab as the active ingredient. Generic alternatives are not available at this time.
Repatha Sureclick is a brand-name prescription drug that reduces “bad” cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) in the bloodstream. It is an expensive drug and is usually prescribed only to patients who are not succeeding with standard cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as statins.
Cells in the liver have a protein, called a receptor, that LDL can attach to. If it does, the liver cell then takes in the LDL molecule and breaks it down. Another protein, called PCSK9, also attaches to that receptor and prevents LDL from attaching, so the LDL molecules go right back into the bloodstream. The active ingredient in Repatha Sureclick, evolocumab, attaches to this PCSK9 protein and prevents it from attaching to liver cells. Instead, LDL attaches to those cells and gets destroyed by the liver. Evolocumab is highly successful at lowering LDL and has few side effects.
The SureClick is an autoinjector pen. Repatha Sureclick is taken every two weeks, and the injection should take about 15 seconds.
The most common side effects of Repatha Sureclick are injection site reactions, such as redness, irritation, pain, and bruising. Infections are a common side effect and include flu, upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, gastroenteritis, and sinus infection.
Other common side effects include diarrhea, stomach upset, headache, dizziness, muscle pain, back pain, and cough. The most serious side effect is high blood pressure.
