What is the brand name of Azathioprine?

Azathioprine is manufactured by multiple companies including Amneal Pharmaceuticals LLC, Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., Zydus Pharmaceuticals (USA) Inc., and others. Imuran is the brand-name version of Azathioprine, and Azasan is a branded generic version of Azathioprine. Whereas a generic drug is named by its ingredient, a branded generic drug is a medicine that is assigned a “name” but is priced as a generic drug.

What is Azathioprine?

Azathioprine is a prescription drug that is used to prevent your body from rejecting a transplanted kidney. This drug causes your body's immune system to weaken, in order to help keep it from rejecting a transplanted kidney. Organ rejection occurs when the immune system treats the new organ as an invader and attacks it. Azathioprine can also be used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, another inflammatory autoimmune condition.

Before taking Azathioprine, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Also, tell your doctor if you have any type of viral, bacterial, or fungal infection, liver disease, or are using chemotherapy with medications like cyclophosphamide, chlorambucil, melphalan, busulfan, or other drugs.

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

Because Azathioprine may increase skin cancer risk, you should avoid sunlight, including tanning beds, while taking Azathioprine. Also, be sure to wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen frequently when outside.

Avoid people who are sick or have infections. Report symptoms of infection to your doctor. Do not get a live vaccine (such as the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine) while taking Azathioprine. Before receiving a vaccine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it is not a live vaccine.

What are the side effects of Azathioprine?

Because Azathioprine suppresses the immune system, people who take this medicine have a higher risk for infections. Azathioprine can also increase the risk for cancer, especially certain lymphomas, that can cause death. These cancers have mostly occurreed in teenagers and younger men with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. However, anyone with an autoimmune inflammatory condition can be at risk. Before taking Azathioprine, discuss risks with your doctor.

Common side effects associated with the use of Azathioprine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, muscle pain, and mouth sores.

Allergic reactions are rare. Symptoms of hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat require emergency medical attention. Azathioprine can cause a serious brain infection that can be fatal. Tell your doctor right away if you have problems with speech, thought, vision, or movement. Symptoms may start gradually but can worsen quickly.

Speak to your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • signs of infection including fever, chills, weakness, flu symptoms, sore throat, cough, or pain or burning when you urinate

  • severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

  • easy bruising, unusual bleeding

  • rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath

  • pale skin, cold hands and feet

  • dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

This is not a complete list of possible side effects and others may occur. Talk to your doctor before using Azathioprine to determine if it is right for you.
