Imuran is a prescription immune-suppressing drug used with other immune-suppressing drugs to prevent organ rejection after a kidney transplant. Imuran also treats active rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which an overactive immune system attacks healthy joint tissue. The active ingredient in Imuran, azathioprine, “slows down” the immune system by blocking the ability of white blood cells, the body's defense system, from producing more white blood cells. Imuran costs $286.52 at full price. A SingleCare Imuran coupon reduces that price to $9.94.
Our price history metrics are calculated from aggregate prescription data that we receive from all participating pharmacies. This chart updates daily to show new price fluctuations. If a data point is missing from the chart, it is because we do not have enough data to produce a reliable figure.
Pharmacy | Imuran Retail Price | Imuran SingleCare Price |
---|---|---|
CVS Pharmacy | $46.43 | $37.28 |
Walmart | $37.61 | $25.95 |
Walgreens | $46.59 | $27.73 |
Kroger Pharmacy | $37.72 | $11.65 |

At most pharmacies, the full cost of Imuran will be $286.52. With a SingleCare savings card, that same prescription will cost $9.94 per prescription fill of 30, 50mg Tablet. SingleCare is welcomed throughout the country and in your neighborhood at participating pharmacies such as CVS, Longs Drugs, Walgreens, and others.
Depending on your insurance plan, the copay cost of Imuran will vary. With a SingleCare Imuran coupon, though, Imuran costs only $9.94, which may be lower than your copay. To get the best price on Imuran, compare your insurance copay to SingleCare’s discount.
Medicare prescription drug insurance plans usually do not provide coverage for Imuran. However, Imuran is considered a necessary part of transplant surgery and so is covered by Medicare Part B as a medical benefit. If Medicare Part B does not cover Imuran, it may be covered by Medicare Part D. If you don't have Medicare coverage, consider using a SingleCare Imuran coupon for your prescription. With SingleCare, the price of Imuran is $9.94 for 30, 50mg Tablet.
Imuran is a brand-name prescription drug with the active ingredient azathioprine. Generic azathioprine is available from manufacturers such as West-Ward, Salix (as Azasan), and Sandoz, among others. Search the SingleCare website or app for azathioprine or Azasan if you need more information or savings coupons for generic Imuran.
Imuran is a prescription immune-suppressing drug prescribed with other immunosuppressants to prevent organ rejection after a kidney transplant. Imuran also treats active rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which an overactive immune system attacks healthy joint tissue.
Organ rejection begins with the body identifying a transplanted organ as “foreign,” and then attacks the organ as it would any other infection. Organ rejection happens when the immune system damages the organ enough to compromise its ability to function.
A critical component of immune reactions is the proliferation of white blood cells, the cells that actually attack infections or foreign tissues. When attacking an infection or other “invader,” white blood cells divide quickly so that a white blood cell army can attack the invader. The active ingredient in Imuran, azathioprine, blocks the ability of cells to copy their genetic information and divide into new cells. As a result, there will not be enough white blood cells to attack the newly-transplanted organ or, for rheumatoid arthritis, the joint tissue.
Imuran is first administered right after a transplant surgery and taken until discontinued—the best time to discontinue Imuran after transplant has not been determined. For rheumatoid arthritis, Imuran is given for up to 12 weeks. Patients should see improvement in four to six weeks.
Imuran suppresses the immune system, the first line of defense against infections. So Imuran lowers the body's ability to prevent or fight infections, putting patients at a higher risk of infections. Imuran also puts patients at risk for cancer, particularly lymphoma.
Other side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, hair loss, rash, loss of appetite, and mouth sores. Allergic reactions are rare, but you should watch for signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, wheezing) and immediately talk to your doctor.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult with your prescribing physician and pharmacist about possible side effects before starting on Imuran.
