What is Cellcept?

Cellcept is a prescription medicine for patients who have had a kidney, heart, or liver transplant to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ. Cellcept can also be used by children who have a kidney transplant. However, it is not known if this medication is safe for use by children who have had heart or liver transplants. After the transplant, you may take several of these anti-rejection medicines to keep your immune system from rejecting the transplant. Cellcept is available in various forms including capsules, tablets, and an oral suspension.

Before taking Cellcept, tell your healthcare professional about any other medical conditions you may have, including if you have ulcers, if you are pregnant, or if you plan to become pregnant. Cellcept has been known to increase your risk of miscarriage and can cause birth defects. You should also tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. These medicines can affect how Cellcept works. If you are taking certain antiviral medications, antibiotics, antacids, proton pump inhibitors, and oral contraceptives (birth control pills), these need to be taken at least two hours before you take Cellcept because absorption may be affected.

You should use Cellcept exactly as it was prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not stop taking Cellcept or change your dose without first talking to your doctor. If you miss a dose call your doctor for medical advice.

What are the side effects of Cellcept?

Common side effects of Cellcept in adults include diarrhea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and fast heartbeat.

Common side effects of Cellcept in children include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, sore throat, high blood pressure, low white blood cell count, and low red blood cell count.

Cellcept is an immunosuppressant and can increase your risk of getting certain cancers, especially skin cancer and lymphomas. This medication can also increase your risk of getting viral infections, a brain infection called Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy, and fungal infections.

This is not a complete list of the possible side effects of Cellcept and others can occur. For more information about the risks associated with using Cellcept you can talk to your doctor or visit the Cellcept website. You can also report your side effects to the FDA.
