What is Myfortic?

Myfortic is a selective immunosuppressant that is used by kidney transplant patients to prevent organ rejection. Myfortic can be used by adult and pediatric patients who are at least five years old and six months post-kidney transplant. Myfortic works by weakening your body's immune system to help your body accept the new kidney. After a kidney transplant, your body may want to reject the newly transplanted organ, and immunosuppressants like Myfortic work to prevent this rejection.

Do not use Myfortic if you are allergic to mycophenolate mofetil or mycophenolic acid.

Before taking Myfortic tell your doctor about any other medical conditions you are being treated for including if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a stomach ulcer, Hepatitis B or C, or any kind of infection (bacterial, viral, fungal). Myfortic can cause miscarriage and birth defects. Talk to your doctor about birth control options. You should not breastfeed while taking {{drug}. If you are using any medications, you should also inform your healthcare provider. This includes all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. If you are taking azathioprine, cholestyramine, or antiviral medicines such as Acyclovir, Ganciclovir, or Valganciclovir, tell your doctor. Myfortic can lessen the effectiveness of hormonal birth control. You should not receive any live vaccines while using Myfortic.

Use Myfortic exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Myfortic is usually taken on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2  hours after you have eaten.

Keep Myfortic securely out of the reach of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Myfortic?

Common side effects of Myfortic include indigestion, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, and insomnia.

Myfortic can cause your body to overproduce white blood cells which can lead to cancer, severe brain infection, and a viral infection that causes kidney transplant failure. Call your doctor right away if you have a fever, swollen glands, cold or flu symptoms, confusion or thinking problems, or pain when you urinate.

If you have signs of an allergic reaction after taking Myfortic, get immediate medical attention. Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, rash, itching, trouble breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, throat, and tongue.

This is not a complete list of the possible side effects of Myfortic. Talk to your doctor about all the risks and benefits of using Myfortic to ensure it is right for you or your child. You can also report any side effects to the FDA.

Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.
