Simponi is a brand-name TNF alpha-inhibitor drug that is manufactured by Janssen Biotech, Inc. A generic version of this drug is not currently available. Simponi Aria is a related prescription medicine that is also manufactured by Janssen Biotech, Inc.
Simponi is a brand-name prescription medication that is used to treat the symptoms of several types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. This medication is also used to treat moderately to severely acute ulcerative colitis. Simponi works by attacking the protein tumor necrosis factor, or TNF, that is responsible for joint damage and swelling. As the swelling of joints goes down, Simponi further helps to preserve the joint so it can function. Depending on the type of arthritis, Simponi can be used alone or in combination with another drug known as methotrexate.
If you are using Simponi for ulcerative colitis, it works to reduce the symptoms that come with the condition such as abdominal pain or cramping, diarrhea, and bloody stools. Simponi is available as a subcutaneous or intravenous injection. This medication is not meant to be used by patients who are younger than 18 years old.
Do not use Simponi if you are allergic to any of its ingredients including golimumab.
Before using Simponi tell your doctor about all other conditions you may have including if you have or if you have had Hepatitis B, diabetes, certain types of cancer such as skin cancer and lymphoma, HIV, psoriasis, weakened immune system, and if you have a latex allergy. If you have been exposed to tuberculosis or fungal infection, you also need to tell your doctor. If you were taking Simponi during your pregnancy, tell your baby's pediatrician.
You also need to tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you are using including all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements, and vitamins. If you are taking medications that contain anakinra, tocilizumab, rituximab, or abatacept, you need to tell your doctor. If you plan to receive any live vaccines, tell your healthcare provider.
Only use Simponi as prescribed by your doctor. Be sure to read and understand your prescribing information and medication guide before starting treatment. Your condition will determine the type of injection you receive and your frequency of doses. A certified medical professional will administer your intravenous injection. However, for the subcutaneous injection, once you and your doctor are comfortable with the self-injection process, you can then administer your own medication.
Common side effects of Simponi include upper respiratory tract infection, reaction at the site of injection, and viral infections. You could also develop psoriasis or get worsened symptoms. If you develop red scaly patches or raised bumps that are filled with pus, you should tell your doctor right away.
Simponi lowers your ability to fight infections. In some patients who are 65 years and older, there have been reports of serious infections caused by viruses, fungi or bacteria that have spread throughout the body. Stop using this medication and get immediate medical advice if you have any signs of a new infection, including muscle aches, fever, chills, shortness of breath, excessive sweating, diarrhea, weight loss, and skin sores.
Medications like Simponi also increase your risk of heart failure. Your healthcare provider will closely monitor you if you have heart failure. If you have new or worsening symptoms of heart failure such as shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling of your lower legs or feet, or sudden weight gain.
Taking TNF-blocker medicines like Simponi also increases your risk of developing certain rare and sometimes fatal cancers (lymphoma) in teenagers and young men with ulcerative colitis. Your healthcare provider may also recommend that women using Simponi get screened for cervical cancer. You could also develop certain skin cancers while taking Simponi.
You may also develop liver problems while using Simponi. Tell your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of right-sided upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, bruising, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. Patients have developed nervous system problems such as multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barré syndrome. If you have vision changes, weakness in your arms or legs, or numbness or tingling in any part of your body, you should inform your doctor right away.
If you have signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, rash, itching, swollen, peeling or blistered skin, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, throat, or tongue get immediate medical attention.
This is not a complete list of the possible effects of Simponi and others can occur. You can all discuss all the potential risks and other serious side effects associated with using Simponi with your doctor. You can also report your side effects to the FDA.
