What is the brand name of Celecoxib?

Celecoxib is a generic prescription drug. It is the generic form of a brand name prescription drug called Celebrex.

What is Celecoxib?

Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is an FDA-approved prescription drug that is commonly used to treat pain and inflammation caused by several conditions such as menstrual pain, arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and fibromatosis. Celecoxib may also be used to treat other conditions as prescribed by your primary healthcare provider. Cox-2 is an enzyme in your body that helps produce chemicals (prostaglandins) that are released in response to pain and inflammation (that may be caused by an infection or an injury). Celecoxib works by blocking or reducing the production of prostaglandins in your body to relieve pain and inflammation. The pain-relieving effects of Celecoxib may last up to 12  hours.

Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have. If you have certain gastrointestinal or cardiovascular risk factors, Celecoxib may not be safe for you. Celecoxib has a black box warning, which is the strongest warning required by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration). These warnings include:

  • Celecoxib may increase your risk of stroke or a fatal heart attack. People with heart problems or increased risk factors for heart problems are at higher risk.

  • Do not use Celecoxib either before or after a heart bypass surgery.

  • Celecoxib may result in fatal stomach or intestinal bleeding. Older adults are at higher risk.

Use Celecoxib as directed by your healthcare provider and keep out of reach of children and pets. You should let your doctor know of all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medication, herbal treatments, vitamins, and mineral supplements you take before using Celecoxib. Avoid alcohol when taking Celecoxib. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding to avoid any harm to your infant or unborn.

What are the side effects of Celecoxib?

Common side effects of Celecoxib may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, gas, dizziness, headache, swelling of your hands or feet, and symptoms of a cold such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat. Other possible side effects may occur that are not listed here, as this is not the full list of side effects. Talk to your doctor about what side effects to expect with Celecoxib treatment.

Seek emergency medical treatment right away if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction such as a red or purple skin rash that may have blistering and peeling, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or throat.

Seek immediate medical attention if you have chest pain, sudden numbness or weakness on one side of your body, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or leg swelling.

Stop taking Celebrex and call your doctor right away if you are vomiting blood, have black/tarry stools, stomach pain, symptoms of jaundice (yellowing of the eyes/skin), feel unusually fatigued or weak, or have flu like symptoms.

Consult a healthcare professional for additional information regarding drug treatments, serious side effects, medical advice, or any further questions.
