What is Duexis?

Duexis is an FDA-approved prescription drug that contains a combination of ibuprofen and famotidine. It is used to relieve pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis while, at the same time, decreasing the risk of developing an ulcer from the use of ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that blocks the creation of certain substances that cause inflammation in your body. This helps to reduce pain and swelling. Famotidine is an H2 blocker that reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. A reduction in acid reduces the risk of developing ulcers.

This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet and should be used only as directed by your physician. Your dosage will usually be decided based on your doctor's assessment of your medical condition and your response to the treatment.

What are the side effects of Duexis?

Nausea, vomiting, headaches, upset stomach, weight gain, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, and dizziness are some common side effects associated with Duexis. If you are experiencing any of these side effects and they persist or worsen, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Duexis may raise your blood pressure. Ensure that you monitor your blood pressure regularly and tell your doctor if your results are high.

In rare cases, this medication may cause serious and possibly fatal liver disease. Seek medical assistance right away if you experience any symptoms of liver damage such as vomiting that does not stop, loss of appetite, stomach pain, dark urine, and yellowing eyes and skin. The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories has also been associated with an increase in cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. To minimize this risk, they should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible.

This is not a complete list of side effects. If you experience allergic reactions or side effects other than the ones listed above, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately for medical advice.
