Rebif is a brand-name prescription drug. Generic versions are not available at this time.
Rebif is a brand-name prescription drug that is administered as an injection. It is used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis, a progressive disorder in which the immune system attacks and damages the body’s own nerve cells. Multiple sclerosis can lead to inflammation and cause nerves to lose their protective covering—the myelin sheath. As the myelin degenerates, nerves lose their ability to send signals and eventually die.
The active ingredient in Rebif, interferon beta-1a, decreases immune cell activity on the nerves by binding to specific receptors on immune cells to block their actions. Rebif is normally injected at a dose of 22 or 44 mcg three times per week below the skin (subcutaneously). A healthcare provider may administer the first dose. For future doses, your provider may instruct you on how to use a prefilled syringe of Rebif or a single-dose autoinjector known as Rebif Rebidose.
The most common side effects of Rebif are injection site reactions, including pain, swelling, or redness around the area of injection. Rebif may also cause flu-like symptoms that occur shortly after the injection. However, these side effects typically disappear within a day or two. Other common side effects of Rebif include, but are not limited to, headache, stomach pain, muscle pain, and fatigue.
Serious side effects of Rebif may include depression, suicidal thoughts, liver problems, blood cell disorders, decreased blood cell counts, seizures, and allergic reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, rash, or trouble breathing.
Talk to a healthcare provider for additional information about other possible side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and medical advice associated with Rebif.
