Tecfidera is an extended-release prescription drug that reduces relapses, slows nerve damage, and delays the onset of physical disabilities in patients with multiple sclerosis, a progressive and degenerative condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the central nervous system.
Multiple sclerosis damages nerves and kills brain and spinal cord tissue primarily through the swelling caused by the immune response (the inflammation response). As a direct result of the inflammation response, nerves lose their protective covering (the myelin sheath) and are unable to generate electrical signals. Eventually, the nerves die and scars (sclerosis) are left behind. It is believed that the active ingredient in Tecfidera, dimethyl fumarate, relieves the swelling caused by the immune system and so reduces the nerve damage caused by MS relapses.
Tecfidera is taken as a capsule once daily. It is intended for continual use or until the patient can no longer tolerate Tecfidera, at which point it will be prescribed at a lower dose twice a day or discontinued altogether.
Common side effects of Tecfidera include, but are not limited to, abdominal pain, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, itching, flushing, and redness. In very rare cases, Tecfidera may cause liver problems.
Allergic reactions are rare, but potentially severe, including anaphylaxis, a dangerous drop in blood pressure. If you experience any allergic reactions to Tecfidera, such as rash, itching, hives, or wheezing, talk to your physician.
